What are the different wedding dress shapes?

If you are confused by the various names given to wedding dress silhouettes then you are not alone – and we are here to help! Here at Boutique Of Dreams we want you to find the perfect wedding dress with a style that suits your shape, and your personality. There are several different wedding dress shapes or silhouettes that are designers create for beautiful wedding dresses. Here we will explore the most popular ones:

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WEDDING DRESS SHAPES?

1. A-LINE

This silhouette is fitted at the top and flares out gradually to the hem, resembling the shape of an uppercase A.

A-LINE INSPO...

In our boutique we absolutely love the styling of the Eva Lendel Primrose which has the gorgeous A-line silhouette with all the detail and lace you could dream of.

Perfect for city weddings, country weddings and destination celebrations alike; this gown will make you feel incredible. The added bonus of the A-line silhouette it is one of the most comfortable too!

2. Ballgown/Princess:

This style is characterized by a fitted bodice and a full, voluminous skirt that flares out from the waist.

PRINCESS INSPO...

The ballgown or princess shape is the fairy tale classic of the wedding dress world. The Melrose Sophie is the ultimate modern example of how a princess silhouette can look dreamy, romantic and ever so subtly sexy.

You have to come and see us to try this gown if you want to have your Cinderella moment…

3: Mermaid:

This silhouette is fitted through the bodice, waist, and hips, and then flares out dramatically at or below the knee.

MERMAID INSPO...

Celebrate your curves with the mermaid wedding dress shape – this style will hug you in all the right places and help you unlock that inner goddess!

We absolutely love the Miss Chloe Sara for all the mermaid vibes. With a lace bodice and romantic sleeve details making this dress bang on trend for 2023/2024 weddings…

4: Sheath:

This style is fitted through the entire length of the body, from the neckline to the hem, with minimal flare.

SHEATH INSPO...

If you want to ooze sensuality and showcase your gorgeous figure then the sheath dress is for you.

The Jessica Couture range have some stunning sheath dresses, and here at our Norwich boutique we are in love with the Sheena – a breath taking sheath dress with drama, detail and glamour radiating from every stitch.

Why not come and try on our range of sheath dresses in the boutique?

5. Empire:

This silhouette has a high waistline that sits just below the bust, with a long, flowing skirt that skims over the body.

EMPIRE INSPO...

Empire line gowns are quite a specialist choice for wedding gown, and are perfect for those looking to create a wedding aesthetic that has a nod to themes such as Pride & Prejudice or Bridgerton vibes. Although we don’t have exact Empire line silhouettes in our Boutique, we do have some gorgeous fit n flare gowns and sheath dresses that can help you to create a modern take on this aesthetic. For example we have the gorgeous Jessica Couture Soraya with the added drama of the billowing sleeve that will give you all the period drama vibes.

6. Trumpet:

This style is fitted through the bodice and hips, then flares out at mid-thigh, similar to the shape of a trumpet.

TRUMPET INSPO...

The trumpet silhouette is a version of the fit n flare that we totally love in the Boutique, because it gives you all the drama and curve appeal – whilst giving you the freedom to get down on the dancefloor at the reception!

We have some gorgeous fit n flare gowns in the  boutique, and one of our favourites has to be the Jessica Couture Georgia. You will love this dress if you want to combine structure, sex appeal and fluidity.

7. Tea-length:

This style features a hemline that falls between the knee and ankle, typically with a full skirt.

TEA LENGTH INSPO

The tea-length wedding gown silhouette is perfect for brides wanting to incorporate fun into their wedding day look.

This is not a style we specialise in here at Boutique Of Dreams, but we are totally loving these real brides from Pinterest that are rocking the vibe.

8. Mini:

This style is a short dress that falls above the knee or mid-thigh, and is often worn for more casual or beach weddings.

MINI INSPO...

For those brides who want to throw the tradition book out the window, the mini dress is a show stopping choice!

If you want to create a look that incorporates a mini dress but also gives you the flowing look to combine tradition into your overall look, then we think you should check out the Miss Chloe Selene  – this is Hollywood all the way and could be the dress that makes you say “Yes!”
